After graduating with a degree in history as well as with completion of pre-medical requirements I started tutoring students grades k-12 as well as college students in math, science, english and reading. After college I completed 2 years of FAA flight training and began teaching ground and flight instruction for all levels of pilot training (including aerobatics), which has allowed me to hone my teaching skills working with so many different age groups, personalities and cultural backgrounds. As a flight instructor I teach aerodynamics and basic physics while using math on a regular basis.
I work well with children and adults alike. I enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect explanation for each individual that I works with their personal thought processes (as everyone thinks about things a little differently - that is the challenge of teaching). I believe that helping a person d ... read more

My style of teaching is to first get the student to understand the basics that are needed as a foundation. For example, my friend was having trouble completing accounting homework and I soon realized that it was because he had not memorized the basic equations; i.e., "assets - liabilities = owner's equity," and "beginning inventory + purchases - ending inventory = cost of goods sold." Just about impossible to advance without the basics.
At Hartnell College I tutured math and economics. Recently I tutored a co-worker who was taking a college Accounting class and he appreciated it and said that I was very helpful. I have a Bachelor's degree in accounting and many years of accounting experience. I also have knowledge of computer programming with html, css, javascript, php, and mysql. I have advanced skills in Excel spreadsheets. I also know Word, Powerpoint, Access, and Quickboo ... read more

My teaching follows the experiential learning paradigm with a focus on utilizing the student’s inherent creative skills in order to relate information and pursue skill attainment and enhancement. The tutoring will be very “hands-on” for the student during the sessions, getting them to actively participate in a learning atmosphere by targeting multiple skill-sets, modes of learning, and intelligences. The top priority is providing an educational “experience,” rather than just relaying information, in order to help youth grow as humans, as well as students.
Communication has always been an interest of mine so I pursued a journalism degree and spent many hours in education to be an adept communicator through the written word. I also enjoy the person-to-person communication that is involved with the journalism profession. I have expanded my skills and knowledge through pursuing a creat ... read more

Through my different career experiences I have discovered that my heart is in working with children, and I believe that given the proper environment and support every child is capable of learning and growing. Having tutored and received tutoring myself during times in which I was struggling, I believe that having struggled myself, that I understand from a personal perspective what works best in helping a person succeed. I often develop a friendly personal relationship with whom ever I work with and believe a mutual respect is necessary for each person to succeed. I understand the importance of step by step learning, especially with math, that it is necessary and it is essential that none of those steps are missed or skipped over.
Holding a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, I tutored in a math lab during the summer of my college years and later went into the Peace Corps ... read more

My teaching style is hands on. I give hints and partial answers in an effort to encourage students to think through problems and attempt to solve them. If necessary, I separate an idea into simpler terms, and help students learn each term before continuing. I give examples which illustrate a point or demonstrate a procedure. At times, my students write short essays, which I critique for sentence structure, word choice, tense matching, and organization. When a student is reading aloud, I follow along, interjecting if necessary with the correct pronunciation or the proper syllable emphasis.
In college, I was taught to organize topics in Math, Science and English, using outlines. This ensured that I studied all of the material presented in class. During my career, I use the same method to grasp difficult concepts. As a technical advisor, I shared my knowledge with clients, answering ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher for six years and a physical therapy aide for one, I believe I have very good teaching skills. Not only did I have to teach students music and math, subjects I know students are uncomfortable with, I had to teach and motivate patients to do exercises while they were in pain. I have had many years of experience tutoring and teaching students in Kindergarten through 12th grade computers, math, English and reading. I also have taught these same grades many guitar, percussion and voice lessons. I am classically trained in the voice area and I have a math minor.
I am able to teach children of all ages and also am able to tailor my teaching style to the age I am teaching. Through encouragement and pointing in the correct direction instead of just giving an answer, I believe that the student learns best. Because I know all students learn at in different ways and at diff ... read more
