I truly enjoy teaching and working with all levels of math learners. I was blessed to have great math teachers in my education that transferred their passion for the subject on to me. Many students are very apprehensive when they enter math classes because the concepts seem so foreign. I feel the most important thing when it comes to math tutoring is being able to break down mathematical concepts in easy to understand terms so that students are not overwhelmed. Math is fun if it is taught the right way!

A Little Bit About Me...

At Hartnell College I tutured math and economics. Recently I tutored a co-worker who was taking a college Accounting class and he appreciated it and said that I was very helpful. I have a Bachelor's degree in accounting and many years of accounting experience. I also have knowledge of computer programming with html, css, javascript, php, and mysql. I have advanced skills in Excel spreadsheets. I also know Word, Powerpoint, Access, and Quickbooks. I can tutor math through the pre-calculus level. I'm also good at English and received an "A" in Business English. I can tutor drums (drum set, reading music for snare drum) through intermediate level.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher I work well with my students, giving them the basic ideas that they need to learn to appreciate mathematics. As a mother of four, I provided them the idea that mathematics is really an enjoyable subject.With much patience and compassion, I was able to impart to them that learning is fun. I give them lots of examples to solve, then I explain to them the step by step computation. In the end, I would give them the short-cut method in arriving at the correct solution but always reminding them that written solutions are very important.
After graduation in 1979, I decided to continue my studies and got units in MA Mathematics. Having earned 12 units, I worked as a college instructor, teaching subjects like college algebra, trigonometry, statistics and business mathematics from 1980 to 1990. I am a teacher at heart and many of the students and other professionals in my classes have said that I should change professions. I approach teaching as a process of understanding why certain activities or processes are required to get an answer. I treat all computer/math/study activities/problems in a way that students understand the logic of the steps taken. I stress the “breaking down” of a problem into its component parts is an integral part of life, not just math, accounting or other school assignments. It is a thrill when a student reaches the point of understanding this process and masters the task at hand

Holding a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, I tutored in a math lab during the summer of my college years and later went into the Peace Corps in Zimbabwe to teach math and science to high school level students. I have also worked as a civil engineer and have directly applied my civil engineering degree in designing grading and utility plans for commercial developments. As a female working in a male dominated field I feel strongly about supporting young girls in pursing their dreams just as equally as young boys. I like being a role model to younger generations and hope that some day there is not such an imbalance in certain areas of study such as the math and sciences.

During my career, I use the same method to grasp difficult concepts. As a technical advisor, I shared my knowledge with clients, answering questions and solving problems. As a tutor, I help my students develop strong expertise. At my children's school, I have worked with kids aged 5 to 11 for several years. We work in groups, or individually. I helped my older daughter with her high school English and Math. Reading classic books is a passion of mine. I express a joy for reading to my students, and stress its importance.

More About This Tutor...

I have always been driven to learn and pursue and education, this led me to completing my bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in history from UC- San Diego. I enjoyed tutoring math, science and english while in high school and continued in college. After graduating I volunteered in Chile teaching English which greatly improved my teaching skills and improved my Spanish Language abilities. I currently work as a substitute teacher which allows me to continue to gain teaching experience while I work towards a full credential
